ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥
salok mahalaa teejaa ||
Shalok, Third Mehla:
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਦਾਧੀ ਜਲਿ ਮੁਈ ਜਲਿ ਜਲਿ ਕਰੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
tirasanaa dhaadhee jal muiee jal jal kare pukaar ||
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਸਾੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਸੜ ਸੜ ਕੇ ਵਿਲਕ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ
Consumed by desires, the world is burning and dying; burning and burning, it cries out.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੀਤਲ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਵਾਰ ॥
satigur seetal je milai fir jalai na dhoojee vaar ||
ਜੇ ਇਹ ਠੰਡ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਦੂਜੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਨਾਹ ਸੜੇ
But if it meets with the cooling and soothing True Guru, it does not burn any longer.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
naanak vin naavai nirabhau ko nahee jichar sabadh na kare veechaar ||1||
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਦ ਤਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨਾਹ ਕਰੇ ਤਦ ਤਕ (ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਤੇ) ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ (ਇਹ ਡਰ ਤੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਹੀ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।
O Nanak, without the Name, and without contemplating the Word of the Shabad, no one becomes fearless. ||1||

Third Mehla:
ਭੇਖੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਬੁਝਈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਹੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
bhekhee agan na bujhiee chi(n)taa hai man maeh ||
ਭੇਖ ਧਾਰਿਆਂ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੁੱਝਦੀ, ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ
Wearing ceremonial robes, the fire is not quenched, and the mind is filled with anxiety.
ਵਰਮੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਸਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਰੈ ਤਿਉ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
varamee maaree saap na marai tiau nigure karam kamaeh ||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੱਪ ਦੀ ਰੁੱਡ ਬੰਦ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਸੱਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰਦਾ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਮਿਟਾਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁੱਝਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ) ।
Destroying the snake’s hole, the snake is not killed; it is just like doing deeds without a Guru.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
satigur dhaataa seveeaai sabadh vasai man aai ||
ਜੇ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ
Serving the Giver, the True Guru, the Shabad comes to abide in the mind.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਇ ॥
man tan seetal saa(n)t hoi tirasanaa agan bujhai ||
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਠੰਢਾ ਠਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
The mind and body are cooled and soothed; peace ensues, and the fire of desire is quenched.
ਸੁਖਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
sukhaa sir sadhaa sukh hoi jaa vichahu aap gavai ||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ) ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The supreme comforts and lasting peace are obtained, when one eradicates ego from within.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
guramukh audhaasee so kare j sach rahai liv lai ||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਲੋਂ) ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ
He alone becomes a detached Gurmukh, who lovingly focuses his consciousness on the True Lord.
ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਜਾ ਆਘਾਇ ॥
chi(n)taa mool na hoviee har naam rajaa aaghai ||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਉੱਕਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੱਜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Anxiety does not affect him at all; he is satisfied and satiated with the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਚਹਿ ਪਚਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak naam binaa neh chhooTeeaai haumai pacheh pachai ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ, (ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਜੀਵ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਸੜਦੇ ਹਨ ।
O Nanak, without the Naam, no one is saved; they are utterly ruined by egotism. ||2||

Pauree:
ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤਿਨੀ ਪਾਇਅੜੇ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ॥
jinee har har naam dhiaaiaa tinee paiaRe sarab sukhaa ||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲ ਗਏ ਹਨ
Those who meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, obtain all peace and comforts.
ਸਭੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਸਫਲੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗੀ ਭੁਖਾ ॥
sabh janam tinaa kaa safal hai jin har ke naam kee man laagee bhukhaa ||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫਲ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ‘ਨਾਮ’ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
Fruitful is the entire life of those, who hunger for the Name of the Lord in their minds.
ਜਿਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਏ ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖਾ ॥
jinee gur kai bachan aaraadhiaa tin visar ge sabh dhukhaa ||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ ।
Those who worship the Lord in adoration, through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, forget all their pains and suffering.
ਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਪਰਾਈ ਚੁਖਾ ॥
te sa(n)t bhale gurasikh hai jin naahee chi(n)t paraiee chukhaa ||
ਉਹ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਚੰਗੇ ਸੰਤ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਆਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖੀ
Those Gursikhs are good Saints, who care for nothing other than the Lord.
ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਮੁਖਾ ॥੬॥
dhan dha(n)n tinaa kaa guroo hai jis a(n)mirat fal har laage mukhaa ||6||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਭੀ ਧੰਨ ਹੈ, ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਰੂਪ) ਅਮਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਫਲ ਲੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਨਿਕਲਦੇ ਹਨ) ।੬।
Blessed, blessed is their Guru, whose mouth tastes the Ambrosial Fruit of the Lord’s Name. ||6||
