ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
soratt mahalaa pehilaa ||
Sorat’h, First Mehla:
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਧੁਰਾਹੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
sarab jeeaa sir lekh dhuraahoo bin lekhai nahee koiee jeeau ||
ਧੁਰੋਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ (ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਲੇਖ (ਉੱਕਰਿਆ ਪਿਆ) ਹੈ । ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਐਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਇਸ ਲੇਖ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵੇ ।
Destiny, pre-ordained by the Lord, looms over the heads of all beings; no one is without this pre-ordained destiny.
ਆਪਿ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
aap alekh kudharat kar dhekhai hukam chalaae soiee jeeau ||1||
ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਇਸ (ਕਰਮ-) ਲੇਖ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਤੰਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਇਸ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਨੂੰ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ (ਜਗਤ-ਕਾਰ) ਚਲਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Only He Himself is beyond destiny; creating the creation by His creative power, He beholds it, and causes His Command to be followed. ||1||
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
man re raam japahu sukh hoiee ||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਸਦਾ ਰਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ, (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਨਾਲ) ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ ।
O mind, chant the Name of the Lord, and be at peace.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਸਰੇਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਭੁਗਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ahinis gur ke charan sarevahu har dhaataa bhugataa soiee || rahaau ||
ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਉਸ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰੋ, ਉਹ ਹਰੀ (ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ) ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, (ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਭੋਗਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ।ਰਹਾਉ।
Day and night, serve at the Guru’s feet; the Lord is the Giver, and the Enjoyer. ||Pause||
ਜੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
jo a(n)tar so baahar dhekhahu avar na dhoojaa koiee jeeau ||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ (ਸਾਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਵਿਚ) ਵੇਖ, ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ) ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
He is within – see Him outside as well; there is no one, other than Him.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
guramukh ek dhirasaT kar dhekhahu ghaT ghaT jot samoiee jeeau ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਇੱਕ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਬਣਾ (ਫਿਰ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਸ ਪਏਗਾ ਕਿ) ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ।੨।
As Gurmukh, look upon all with the single eye of equality; in each and every heart, the Divine Light is contained. ||2||
ਚਲਤੌ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਖਹੁ ਘਰਿ ਅਪਨੈ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਇਹ ਮਤਿ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
chalatau ttaak rakhahu ghar apanai gur miliaai ieh mat hoiee jeeau ||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਇਸ (ਬਾਹਰ) ਭਟਕਦੇ (ਮਨ) ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਵੱਸਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ) ਹੀ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖ । ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਅਕਲ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
Restrain your fickle mind, and keep it steady within its own home; meeting the Guru, this understanding is obtained.
ਦੇਖਿ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੁ ਰਹਉ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
dhekh adhirasaT rahau bisamaadhee dhukh bisarai sukh hoiee jeeau ||3||
ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਉਸ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ (ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ) ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਵਿਸਮਾਦ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਪੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ । (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਦੁੱਖ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
Seeing the unseen Lord, you shall be amazed and delighted; forgetting your pain, you shall be at peace. ||3||
ਪੀਵਹੁ ਅਪਿਉ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
peevahu apiau param sukh paieeaai nij ghar vaasaa hoiee jeeau ||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਅਟੱਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਉ, (ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਤਿਆਂ) ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਮਨ ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
Drinking in the ambrosial nectar, you shall attain the highest bliss, and dwell within the home of your own self.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਭਵ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਗਾਈਐ ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥
janam maran bhav bha(n)jan gaieeaai punarap janam na hoiee jeeau ||4||
So sing the Praises of the Lord, the Destroyer of the fear of birth and death, and you shall not be reincarnated again. ||4||
ਤਤੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ਸੋਹੰ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
tat nira(n)jan jot sabaiee soha(n) bhedh na koiee jeeau ||
The essence, the immaculate Lord, the Light of all – I am He and He is me – there is no difference between us.
ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥੧੧॥
apara(n)par paarabraham paramesar naanak gur miliaa soiee jeeau ||5||11||
The Infinite Transcendent Lord, the Supreme Lord God – Nanak has met with Him, the Guru. ||5||11||
