ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Sorat’h, Fifth Mehla:
ਗਈ ਬਹੋੜੁ ਬੰਦੀ ਛੋੜੁ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਦੁਖਦਾਰੀ ॥
giee bahoR ba(n)dhee chhoR nira(n)kaar dhukhadhaaree ||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਗਵਾਚੀ ਹੋਈ (ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ) ਨੂੰ ਵਾਪਸ ਦਿਵਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਕੈਦ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਛੁਡਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਸਰੂਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤੂੰ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਢਾਰਸ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ
The Restorer of what was taken away, the Liberator from captivity; the Formless Lord, the Destroyer of pain.
ਕਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਲੋਭੀ ਮਾਇਆਧਾਰੀ ॥
karam na jaanaa dharam na jaanaa lobhee maiaadhaaree ||
। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਚੰਗਾ ਕਰਮ ਕੋਈ ਚੰਗਾ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ, ਮੈਂ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।
I do not know about karma and good deeds; I do not know about Dharma and righteous living. I am so greedy, chasing after Maya.
naam pario bhagat govi(n)dh kaa ieh raakhahu paij tumaaree ||1||
ਪਰ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਭਗਤ’ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ । ਸੋ, ਹੁਣ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਆਪ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖ ।੧।
I go by the name of God’s devotee; please, save this honor of Yours. ||1||
har jeeau nimaaniaa too maan ||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ! ਤੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ
O Dear Lord, You are the honor of the dishonored.
nicheejiaa cheej kare meraa govi(n)dh teree kudharat kau kurabaan || rahaau ||
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਤੋਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ । ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੇਰਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਕਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਆਦਰ-ਜੋਗ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।ਰਹਾਉ।
You make the unworthy ones worthy, O my Lord of the Universe; I am a sacrifice to Your almighty creative power. ||Pause||
jaisaa baalak bhai subhaiee lakh aparaadh kamaavai ||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਬੱਚਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਲਗਨ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਗ਼ਲਤੀਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
Like the child, innocently making thousands of mistakes
kar aupadhes jhiRake bahu bhaatee bahuR pitaa gal laavai ||
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਿਉ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਕਈ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਝਿੜਕਦਾ ਭੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਫਿਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
his father teaches him, and scolds him so many times, but still, he hugs him close in his embrace.
pichhale aaugun bakhas le prabh aagai maarag paavai ||2||
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਿਤਾ ਭੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਗੁਨਾਹ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਵਾਸਤੇ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਠੀਕ ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Please forgive my past actions, God, and place me on Your path for the future. ||2||
har a(n)tarajaamee sabh bidh jaanai taa kis peh aakh sunaieeaai ||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ) ਹਰੇਕ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਹਾਲਤ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ । (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸ ਪਾਸ (ਆਪਣੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ) ਆਖ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ
The Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, knows all about my state of mind; so who else should I go to and speak to?
kahanai kathan na bheejai gobi(n)dh har bhaavai paij rakhaieeaai ||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ । (ਕਰਣੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਉਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Lord, the Lord of the Universe, is not pleased by mere recitation of words; if it is pleasing to His Will, He preserves our honor.
avar oT mai sagalee dhekhee ik teree oT rahaieeaai ||3||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਏ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਇਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।੩
I have seen all other shelters, but Yours alone remains for me. ||3||
hoi dhiaal kirapaal prabh ttaakur aape sunai bena(n)tee ||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Becoming kind and compassionate, God the Lord and Master Himself listens to my prayer.
pooraa satagur mel milaavai sabh chookai man kee chi(n)tee ||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੇਲ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
He unites me in Union with the Perfect True Guru, and all the cares and anxieties of my mind are dispelled.
har har naam avakhadh mukh paiaa jan naanak sukh vasa(n)tee ||4||12||62||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਦਵਾਈ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਿਤੀਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।੧੨।੬੨।
The Lord, Har, Har, has placed the medicine of the Naam into my mouth; servant Nanak abides in peace. ||4||12||62||
